Clean, compactable sand is carefully & firmly tamped around the timber. John Koch recommends using concrete instead of sand. I used sand for a reason, but John is the expert - do it his way |

I applied roofing tar on the timbers near the groundline to prevent moisture from affecting them. This was probably unnecessary, since the timbers have been pressure treated. I did this on my own, as John makes no mention of it in his notes |
